Thesis on ”Minimal Music in Cinema Today”

Last Friday (22/03/2024) I had the pleasure of supporting my thesis on Minimal music and its correlation with film music, while presenting an original score I created for the short film ”Big, Bad and Scary” (TBA). It is a film about two brothers in the forest, their relationship and the difficult decisions they have to make.

I am glad and honoured to have presented it in front of a wonderful crowd who supported me, and in front of the jury of my department; people whose work I cherish, and I respect.

In this thesis the history of minimal music is explained and analysed:it is a movement that started in America in the 1960s as a reaction to the more complicated, modernist movements. Moreover, the reader is introduced to a brief history of film music, its functions and some pieces as highlights.

There is a thorough analysis of several minimal musical pieces of six new films (Prisoners, 2013, Under the Skin, 2013, Sicarion, 2016, Burning, 2018, Monos, 2019, Earwig, 2021), as well as sheets of them for better understanding. There are several connections between minimal music and concepts that were either proven again during these analyses, or studies for the first time. The themes discussed in these analyses come in perfect correlation with the fshort flm that is introduced through this paper and the musical product.

Regarding the film Big, Bad and Scary (TBD) and its score, the techniques and aesthetics follow specific parameters, while at the same time they make justice and support the film itself. There is an exclusive close examination of the film and its score, as well as sheets.

It has been a great pleasure working on this thesis, as well as the film, with wonderful collaborators, such as Jonathan Waite, the director, to whm I am truly grateful for the trust and initiative, and Tasos Fotopoulos and Eva van der Sterren, the two musicians that recorded for the score.

Thank you everyone, from the bottom of my heart!
